After the commenting challenge this weekend (75 comments), it seemed only fitting to continue on with some mathematical thinking. Math was always easy for me and I did love the work I did in bookkeeping. That double entry self checking process. But it was the “independent study” – the opportunity to work at my own pace that drew me in. After all, I was a senior. So here as I contemplate numbers . . .
Thank you for the idea, Caoimhe Buckley. and your post here. Aggie Kister also gets credit for her post on 3/1/18 here.
Percentage Poem
12% grandma
10% reader
5% cheerleader “Rah”
10% writer
12% learner
6% blogger
3% focused
6% daughter
2% poet
6% leader
3% smartie
10% teacher
8% auntie
7% sister
What’s the total?
Can you see?
It all adds up to,
100% me!
What are your percentages?
How would you describe yourself?
Thank you, Betsy, Beth, Deb, Kathleen, Lanny, Melanie, and Stacey for this daily forum each March. Check out the writers, readers and teachers here.
Love that you wrote a percentage poem! It’s fun learning about people this way! Literacy rich- reader, writer, blogger, and poet!
See where your inspiring poem has led us. I did have two many “-er” nouns. I was at a loss for other descriptions!
Clever format made me think about what my numbers would be.
It was a “thinking” post for sure! Thanks!
Put that into a pie chart!
🙂
Kevin
Kevin, OOOOH! YES!
Love this! I’m starting a poetry unit today with my 6th graders and can’t wait to show them this! And as the day goes on, I’lll ponder my categories and percentages…? Thanks for getting me to think early on a Monday morning. Have a good week.
Sally,
It was so fun!
Have fun with poetry and your 6th graders! ❤
That took some thought, weighing the percentages of your many roles! Fun idea.
Intriguing concept for a poem – 75 post this weekend – nice work!
John,
Comments on 75 posts . . . it was fun to really go find some new friends!
What a great idea! I must try it, too. I’m in awe of your 75 commenting posts! Love it.
Diane, you will love it!
I love this!!! Hmm, really makes you step back and think hard about how you can actually spread yourself too thin if you aren’t careful, what if you run out of percentages!!!
Suzanne,
Too funny because I actually thought about putting some 0’s in . . . I wonder if I would see the same numbers at a different point in the year????
Fran, it’s so interesting to break yourself down into percentages this way! Definitely food for thought. Do you see these percentages as flexible and changing, or fixed and static? Thanks for putting this idea out there 🙂
I’m thinking flexible . . . but I don’t know for sure. I’m still pondering that!
What an interesting way to look at oneself. Really illustrates the fact that we are not only thing or another but a combination of many wonderful and interesting things. This is what makes each one of us a unique and valuable individual.
YES!!
The unique combination . . . I think I want to talk about this some more!!!
Interesting to see where you placed your highest numbers. Of course, grandma is at the top along with learner. I had to laugh at the low number for poet. You might have to revise this one day, because you are a pretty good poet. This poem proves it.
The poet in me was so frustrated that “grandma” is so hard to pair up with a rhyme!!! Thanks! I’m working on it – poet would have been a “0” according to some of my ELA teachers!
Love this idea. I want to try this with my students.
Terrie,
It’s fun! But does require some thought!
Ooh this is a great idea. We once did a pie chart of our time in a PD. Actually it was two pie charts – how you spend your days, and how you would like to spend your days! Very revealing. I want to try this…
Thanks, Mel. It was fun but I was having some format issues with Word Press so it was even trickier than I had imagined! One of Dr. Mary Howard’s famous quotes: How you spend your time shows exactly what you value! ❤
So wait–where’s the WWF percentage? It doesn’t even show up? It’s an interesting practice for sure to think about how we define ourselves in terms of percentages.
No WWF games at all right now, so YES a big 0!
I love your calculations. You should turn this into a pie chart like the ones they show on the Ancestry DNA commercials.
