The Writing Process

Is it a straight line with rigid steps?

Is it a circle? 

Does it depend on the type of writing and the purpose? 

What does your writing process look like?

I began with google images and was shocked to find that most images of the writing process were line by line lists vertically presented.

But I just published and I know that my process was more like this:

  1. Most graphics I have seen and used to teach the writing process were linear in nature. However, this is not the way I work and I always made sure to point that out to my students. For me it is more of a back and forth process, write, feedback, revise and edit, write, feedback revise and edit. I never wanted my students to feel that after one revision they had a perfect paper.

    1. It is so not linear. I think it is circles of colors of writing, feedback, revision, and editing as well. So not linear. I was shocked that 95% were linear.

  3. So exciting to see that work and time and process come to fruition in a publication. I like that my students use blogging to publish their work to a wider audience. It makes their writing more authentic.

      So true that everyone needs a wider audience. It makes writing purposeful to picture the writer reading the text! 🙂

  4. I read it this morning – thanks to Mary Howard – and it is so powerful. My process is so dynamic and the lines zigzag all over the place. Response is so important to the process – in the midst and once published. It is how we continue to learn, grow and reflect. We must give our kiddos experiences with authentic response. That is what keeps a writer motivated and connected. Congrats!!!

    1. Thank you, Clare! Our students will grow by leaps and bounds in their writing craft when they have real readers and authentic places to publish! For sure, that increases motivation and connectedness!

  5. The process to publish is varied. I think it depends on where you are in your writing journey. The idea of publishing in and of itself brings an interesting perspective to the process. It colors it. Thank you for making me think on this!

      Yes, the process is varied. I wonder if the variance is multiplied by the publishing venue! The idea of publishing increased my desire for accurate and timely work. . . the opposite of a sequential, tidy list! Thank you for sharing your response! 🙂

        Think it is amplified by the reach and measure of success. A good and sometimes difficult thing.

  6. Congratulations! I can’t wait to read your published work! I love your visual of the writing process–there’s nothing linear or neat about it. Writing is a personal and messy process and something is wrong if we refuse to let it be that way!
