Music Theory. Ear Training.  As a band member I was so interested in processes. Real world action? Study music. Learn the basic language. 64 scales later. Each labeled. Technical adequacy?  Fun? Boring? What has “stuck” decades later?

    Maybe we need both? Right now I am mostly in Adagio….enjoying the slower pace of summer and choosing the learning that I want to do. Setting my own goals and working towards them at my own pace. Reflecting, reading, writing…..breathing. Thanks for this chance to reflect, Fran!

      I agree that both are necessary. It’s another “balance” that seems to easily move in and out of a positive work flow/comfort level!

  2. I love the comparison between music and life tempo that you make Fran. I would like more adagio. Most of my summer has been allegro as we make plans for the coming school year.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I fear that much of our allegro has been for naught as life is so uncertain. Capturing and enjoying the adagio is KEY!

  3. Not having a music background, I appreciated you adding the definitions for me. When I think about it, my life now is a mix of allegro and adagio. I do see my anxiety over all I can’t control = allegro. I do see reading and writing and walking = adagio. And maybe I should queue up my spotify account today! Maybe adding music could help!

      So many reasons for the tempo to change. I’m thinking blood pressure and allegro for those uncontrollable times. And yet so many lovely adagio times as well.

  4. I really enjoyed your idea of sorting our day to day experiences! I will enjoy thinking if I am working at an allegro or adagio tempo.
    I do wonder if somehow your words spaced differently than you intended, at the end. Like the music and the coffee examples, are they in the “wrong” columns?
    One more question, what is ‘clocks with the dreaded “PF”?’

      Clocks with the dreaded PF – stove and microwave – Power Failure so they need manual “resets”!

  6. As someone who has taken music lessons for many years (accordion) I was familiar with the terms and really like how you apply them to life. I think that since I retire my life has been more adagio rather than allegro. That is not to say that there haven’t been moment…

    1. There’s a “balance” to the adagio and allegro that sets the tempo for life. Interesting to find the variances!

  7. My tempo changes depending on the day of the week. Keeping Leo turns to allegro while my alone time is adagio and much needed for the energy of allegro.

  8. My physical temp is adagio, my mental, allegro. I never considered myself attention deficit until months into shelter in place, and now I lack focus in the most basic of tasks. Hoping the allegro pace of school, in whatever form it takes, helps me regain some sense of balance in my inner and outer tempos. Thank you for the different, musical perspective!

    1. Yes. Yes. YES.
      So many tempos exist in one body. Mental. Emotional. Physical. The tension of Must Do / Should Do . . .
